Development on Final Fantasy XV Will Continue After PC Launch
Sep 24, 2017 - 2:15 PM - by Emabulator

PC Gamer has the story.

Final Fantasy 15: Sexy Boy Road Trip won’t be launching on PC until next year, but Square Enix won’t be leaving us high and dry when we finally get our mitts on it. Game director Hajime Tabata revealed that development would continue on the game over the next year.

Episode Ignis, the next piece of DLC, was planned to be the final piece of content for Final Fantasy 15, but the fan response has inspired the studio to continue developing DLC.

The focus of future content will be on fleshing out the world and its characters, along with finishing the story. “Not only are we further investigating characters through additional episodes, if we don’t convey the setting that is the foundation of the world, we won’t be able to convey the characters’ way of life,” said Tabata.
You can take a peak at Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition on Steam.

Star Trek: Discovery Premiere Episode Releases Today, Following NYC Spaceship Stunt
Sep 24, 2017 - 1:35 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Star Trek Discovery, the first new Star Trek TV series since Enterprise ended more than a decade ago, debuts today. After a number of delays, the premiere episode airs on CBS later today, September 24.

Discovery's first season consists of 15 episodes that will air between now and early next year, with a two-month mid-season break extending from November 7 through January 7. The show is set 10 years before Star Trek: The Original Series and focuses on The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham, rather than the ship's captain. You can get the full rundown in our roundup detailing everything you need to know about Star Trek: Discovery.

To promote the show, a "spaceship" designed to resemble the show's USS Discovery was flown over New York City on Saturday night. The stunt was accomplished by having a helicopter fly around a frame equipped with lights.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds developer slams Fornite for "replicating" gameplay
Sep 22, 2017 - 5:09 PM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

The developer of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has hit out at Epic's Fortnite for "replicating" its game.

n an eyebrow-raising press release, Bluehole exec Chang Han Kim slammed Fortnite's new Battle Royale mode for its similarities to PUBG. Kim said his studio was "concerned" and - ominously - stated it would "contemplate further action".

It's a surprising position to take; despite Battlegrounds' huge popularity, it is far from the first game to offer Battle Royale-inspired gameplay. It's not even the first competitor from a major publisher - GTA Online recently launched its own take, for example.

Fornite is muscling in with the might of Epic behind it, and this week announced an aggressive launch proposition: it will be completely free to download and launch on console as soon as next week, eclipsing PUBG's own Xbox One version. It's feels like it's rattled Bluepoint - not least because Epic has mentioned PUBG while talking about its competitor.

"We've had an ongoing relationship with Epic Games throughout PUBG's development as they are the creators of [Unreal Engine], the engine we licensed for the game," Kim stated. "After listening to the growing feedback from our community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we are concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known.

"We have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press. This was never discussed with us and we don't feel that it's right."

The Evil Within Director Wants To Port Sequel To Nintendo Switch
Sep 22, 2017 - 1:11 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

The Evil Within 2 is out in just a few weeks for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and now producer Shinji Mikami--who previously directed the original game as well as the Resident Evil series--has said he would like to see a Switch version of the horror title.

In an interview with GameSpot, Mikami said, "I think a Switch version would be interesting. I'd like to try it if I had the chance." While not exactly confirmation that such a port is happening, it's at least promising that such a prominent figure in the series (Mikami is acting as producer and supervisor on the sequel) would like to see it happen.

There's at least one small stumbling block however: "First I'd like to buy a Switch myself," Mikami said. "I had to borrow Zelda with the Switch from another staff member to play it."

Ron Howard recently tweeted a tease about a role for Paul Bettany in the upcoming Star Wars anthology film Han Solo. Today he posted a teaser pic that might show us the entrance to the Kessel Run. In the tweet, we see a pic of what looks like the entrance to a cave with the caption, “Spicey?” As Star Wars fans know, Han Solo is very proud of the fact that he flew the Millennium Falcon through the famous Kessel Run in fewer than 12 parsecs. The Kessel Run is the hyperspace route that smugglers use to move spice from the mines on Kessel. Han Solo’s run broke a long-standing record.

Destiny 2 Faction Rallies Start Soon, Guided Games and More
Sep 21, 2017 - 7:10 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has word that the first Destiny 2 Faction Rallies event starts on September 26th.

Weapons tied to factions have begun to pop up in Destiny 2, but things will soon become much more involved. Bungie previously revealed that something called Faction Rallies would begin on September 26, but we had no idea of what those would actually entail. The developer has now provided details on how they'll work and what you can get by participating.

Faction Rallies are a special event that kicks off with the weekly reset on Tuesday, September 26, at 2 AM PT / 5 AM ET / 9 AM BST and runs until the same time on October 3. All three factions return from the original Destiny--Dead Orbit (represented by Arach Jalaal), Future War Cult (Lakshmi-2), and New Monarchy (Executor Hideo)--to task players with "gather[ing] supplies for their faction and destroy[ing] enemy resources." This is done by simply playing the game--you'll choose one of the three factions to align yourself with and then earn Faction Tokens by completing public events, Lost Sectors, Strikes, or the Raid, or by playing Crucible.
Destiny 2 Guided Games: What You Need To Know Ahead Of Launch

One of the new features coming to Destiny 2 is what Bungie is calling "Guided Games." This is where a solo player can group up with a higher-level players to help learn the ropes of end-game activities such as Nightfalls and Raids. The Guided Games feature officially rolls out on September 26, but it's been available for testers for a little over a week now in beta form, and Bungie has now talked about how many people tested it out and what it learned from the beta.
Destiny 2 Known Issues List Includes Clan XP Bug And More

Starting off, the limited-time multiplayer event, Trials of the Nine, was disabled at the wrong time this week. Going forward, you can expect it to run from 10 AM PT on Friday until Tuesday at 2 AM PT. Another issue Bungie is aware of and working on is that Clan XP is not always being awarded upon completion of public events. Bungie said it's also aware of a problem where Clan Engrams are not given to members. One note Bungie provided is that you can't earn a Clan Engram if you quit a clan and join another one before the weekly reset.

Additionally, there is a problem with Destiny's microtransaction store, Eververse. Players are experiencing delays in receiving Silver after buying it through errors such as "Silver Sync Pending" and "Query Failed."
Destiny 2 Going Offline Next Week, Here's When And For How Long

Starting at 6 AM PT on September 25, players won't be able to sign in. At 7 AM PT that day, everyone who is logged in to Destiny 2 will be kicked off. The maintenance period is scheduled to run until 12 PM PT, so all told, there will be interruptions for around six hours. That's if everything goes to plan; there is always a chance the maintenance period could wrap up sooner or, as was the case last time, take longer.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War New Mystic Tribe Video Revealed
Sep 21, 2017 - 10:51 AM - by Evil Avatar

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today released a new video for Middle-earth: Shadow of War, spotlighting the Mystic tribe, a faction of Orcs who specialise in dark magic, rituals and incantations that date back thousands of years. In Shadow of War, Orcs now belong to tribes, which extend their influence stemming from the Overlords ruling the mighty fortresses throughout the open world, providing a rich ecosystem of missions, exploration and a dynamic Orc society with diverse Orc cultures, all brought to life through the expanded Nemesis System. While the Mystic tribe's warriors are as capable as Orcs of other tribes, all of Mordor fear the curses and spells that the Mystic tribe can invoke, who call upon their black magic of the Dark Lord to torment their enemies.

Set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Middle-earth: Shadow of War is an open world action RPG that continues the original narrative of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Players will be engrossed in a richer, more personal and expansive world full of epic heroes and villains, iconic locations, original enemy types, more personalities and a new cast of characters with untold stories.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War will be available for Xbox One X, Xbox One, Windows 10 PC (Windows Store and Steam), PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro beginning October 10, 2017.

Kingsman Director Calls Out Marketing Team For Revealing Plot Twists
Sep 20, 2017 - 8:12 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

The director of Kingsman: The Golden Circle has called out his film's marketing team for giving away too many plot twists in trailers and other promotional materials. If you've seen a trailer for the film or some of its posters, you probably know what he's talking about. Speaking to Deadline, Matthew Vaughn said revealing these secrets "isn't great for the viewing experience," especially in the film's first act.

"I think the marketing department's done a bloody good job of giving away a lot of the twists and turns. That's been a private bugbear of mine, and I guess now a public one," the director said. "They insist it is the right thing to do. I think it isn't great for the viewing experience and the way I structured the first act. It definitely has left me feeling a bit hamstrung; the narrative thrust has been a little bit weakened."

Square Enix is trying to get full-fat Final Fantasy 15 on Nintendo Switch
Sep 20, 2017 - 3:45 PM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

There was some speculation that the Switch would get Final Fantasy 15: Pocket Edition, a mobile spin-off that takes the original game's story and delivers it across 10 episodic chapters tailored for touchscreens, but it sounds as if Square Enix is attempting to get a version of the console game running on Nintendo's hardware.

"We're actually doing very specific technical investigations into what's possible at the moment," Tabata told us at Square Enix's Shinjuku offices ahead of this week's Tokyo Game Show. "Where we are at the moment - we've completed those tests and have worked out where the ground lies. We're currently in the middle of the discussion and debate about what we should be doing, and how to realise that on the Switch.

"The other thing - you see the mobile version, the PC version, one thing we value is to optimise the way the game plays and the experience for the individual hardware it's on rather than a one-size fits all approach. We can't currently announce anything - we haven't come to a full decision on the best way to do it yet. We're having very open, frank discussions with Nintendo at the moment about what they think is the best thing to do. It's all under investigation."

Last week Bethesda made the surprise announcement that it's bringing the recent Doom and the forthcoming Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus to Nintendo Switch, which gives us some cause for optimism when it comes to seeing current-gen console ports on the hybrid hardware. Whether that'd be possible for Final Fantasy 15, meanwhile, seems uncertain right now - though there are options that Square Enix are open to exploring.

Valve aims to combat Steam review bombing with new 'histogram' charts
Sep 20, 2017 - 3:00 PM - by Emabulator

PC Gamer has the story.

"Review-bombing" is a coordinated effort to damage the public profile of a company or product by inundating it with negative reviews. Actual problems with the product in question often have nothing to do with it: Dota 2 got hammered last month because Valve won't make Half-Life 3, and more recently Firewatch suffered because of Sean Vanaman's beef with Pewdiepie. As we reported earlier this summer, it happens because it works, and it's become enough of a problem that Valve has finally been forced to address the issue.

One of the big problems facing Valve, as Alden Kroll said in a new blog post, is that review bombers are "fulfilling the goal of User Reviews" by expressing their opinions on whether or not people should buy a particular game. "But one thing we've noticed is that the issue players are concerned about can often be outside the game itself. It might be that they're unhappy with something the developer has said online, or about choices the developer has made in the Steam version of their game relative to other platforms, or simply that they don't like the developer's political convictions," he wrote.

He acknowledged that those opinions can be relevant to a player's happiness with a game purchase, but that relevance is less obvious when it comes to the actual review score. Data indicates that in most cases, review scores recover to an appropriate level once the bombing campaign is over, but there's no apparent correlation between a developer's response (or lack thereof) to complaints and the score's bounceback.

"In short, review bombs make it harder for the Review Score to achieve its goal of accurately representing the likelihood that you'd be happy with your purchase if you bought them," Kroll said.

Vampyr Delayed to Spring 2018
Sep 20, 2017 - 1:07 PM - by Emabulator

Focus Home Interactive has announced that DontNod's RPG, Vampyr has been delayed to Spring of 2018.

Eagerly awaited by many players at the end of this year, upcoming RPG Vampyr announces the delay of its release date to Spring 2018, on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Oskar Guilbert, CEO of DontNod Entertainment, explains:

'Delaying the release of a project you hold dear is always a tough decision. However, we believe that meeting a deadline should never compromise quality. We were still convinced just a few weeks ago that we would be able to release Vampyr this year. Unfortunately, a technical issue - now solved - has set our teams' schedule back at the end of the development.

This delay allows us enough time for all the polishing and balancing phase, much needed for a game of Vampyr's scope, with its ambitious, semi-open world, its complex narrative and deep RPG mechanics that give players a real impact on the world.

We want to thank our publisher Focus Home Interactive for giving us the means and time necessary to provide players a memorable experience... especially since so many of you are eagerly waiting for it.'

Linda Hamilton returning for new Terminator Movie
Sep 20, 2017 - 9:47 AM - by Evil Avatar

The Hollywood Reporter has word that Linda Hamilton will return to play Sarah Connor in the new Tim Miller (Deadpool) Terminator movie.

Cameron, who will regain the Terminator rights in 2019, is producing the new film series which has Deadpool director Tim Miller and David Ellison of Skydance teaming up.

“As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return,” Cameron said at the fan event, adding that now “there are 50-year old, 60-year old guys out there killing bad guys” in movies, “but there isn’t an example of that for women.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger was previously revealed to be returning as well. He and Linda Hamilton starred together in both the original Terminator in 1984 and the 1991 sequel.

THR adds that Cameron and Miller are treating the new movie as a direct sequel to Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

“We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story,” Cameron said. “We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters, but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”

Apple Overhauls iOS With AR Gaming And App Store Revision
Sep 19, 2017 - 2:49 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

ARKit is a toolset for developers that streamlines the creation process for AR games and apps on the Apple platform. Both the iPhone and iPad can run games built on ARKit with iOS 11 installed. The device's camera and motion sensors provide the real-world space for which game assets are rendered on. For example, The Machines requires a flat surface to draw up the game's maps, and players physically move around to get different viewing angles of the environment.

The Machines was demoed during Apple's recent iPhone event and GameSpot was able to play an early build of the game prior to launch. It works similarly to a MOBA (like Heroes of the Storm or Dota 2) in terms of map structure and abilities subjected to cooldown, but players control multiple characters during a match. It features local and online multiplayer, and a leaderboard. We also got hands-on with Zombie Gunship Revenant, a base-defense wave-based shooter where you place your base anywhere in the real world through your camera.

US Navy Subs Will Use Xbox Controllers
Sep 18, 2017 - 4:17 PM - by Terran

How do you improve a clunky, heavy device for controlling periscopes aboard Virginia-class submarines, the most advanced subs in the Navy? You use familiar, off-the-shelf parts like an Xbox 360 controller!

“The Navy got together and they asked a bunch of J.O.s and junior guys, ‘What can we do to make your life better?’ ” said Lt. j.g. Kyle Leonard, the USS John Warner’s assistant weapons officer, referring to junior officers and sailors. “And one of the things that came out is the controls for the scope. It’s kind of clunky in your hand; it’s real heavy.”

Lockheed Martin and Navy officials have been working to use commercial off-the-shelf technology to reduce costs and take advantage of the technological skills sailors grow up with. The integration of the video game console controller grew out of that effort.
Benefits? Several!

The Xbox controller is no different than the ones a lot of crew members grew up playing with. Lockheed Martin says the sailors who tested the controller at its lab were intuitively able to figure out how to use it on their own within minutes, compared to hours of training required for the joystick.

The Xbox controller also is significantly cheaper. The company says the photonic mast handgrip and imaging control panel that cost about $38,000 can be replaced with an Xbox controller that typically costs less than $30.
Private sector innovation at work. Well done!

PC RPG Divinity: Original Sin 2 Hits Nearly 500K In Sales After Strong Release
Sep 18, 2017 - 1:11 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Divinity: Original Sin II came out just a few days ago, but it's been in Steam Early Access for almost a year. Now, publisher and developer Larian Studios is sharing some sales data, telling Eurogamer the game has sold nearly 500,000 copies in total. 180,000 of those sales have come since its 1.0 release on September 14.

"We're close to hitting 500K units sold, which is a number I believe took us two or three months with Divinity: Original Sin 1," said Swen Vincke, owner of Larian Studios. The game has also hit a milestone in terms of concurrent players on Steam, reaching nearly 86,000 players at one time. At the time of this writing, it's the fourth most-played game on Steam. The response has been unexpected, Vincke told Eurogamer. Servers have struggled to handle the large number of players, but "we should have them up and running again soon," he said.

Vincke also commented on possible console releases in the future. The company had indicated it was waiting to see how the game sold on PC before deciding to release on other systems and, right now, that PC version still remains the focus, he said.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War Campaign That Never Forgets Live Action Trailer
Sep 18, 2017 - 10:41 AM - by Evil Avatar

New “Campaign That Never Forgets” Launches for Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today launched a new “Campaign That Never Forgets,” bringing to life the videogame that never forgets, Middle-earth: Shadow of War. Beginning with an interactive live-action film directed by Neil Huxley (Avatar, Watchmen) and shot by Director of Photography, Fabian Wagner (Game of Thrones), the “Campaign That Never Forgets” faithfully recreates the award-winning Nemesis System, driving viewers to make key story decisions during the siege of a fortress in Mordor. Those decisions then result in a personal relationship with a specific Orc as a loyal ally or vengeful enemy, which will extend beyond the interactive trailer and follow viewers across the internet, emulating the gameplay experience created by the Nemesis System. In Middle-earth: Shadow of War, players now have entirely new ways to journey through the dynamic world, with more choices and opportunities than ever before due to addition of Orc Followers. Whether spared, scarred, recruited or marked, every encounter will be remembered and help fuel the dynamics of society and conflict within Mordor, all brought to life through the expanded Nemesis System.

The interactive live-action film kicking off the Official Middle-earth: Shadow of War “Campaign That Never Forgets” can be viewed and shared at shadowofwar.com.

Final Fantasy Director Will Try To Recreate How Players Felt With Zelda
Sep 17, 2017 - 5:10 AM - by PatrickRes9

Zelda: Breath of the Wild launched back in March and it left a pretty large footprint. In a conversation with Gamespot, Director Hajime Tabata states he will try to draw from Breath of the Wild for his next Final Fantasy title.

"I've heard a lot from the dev team and their reactions to having played it. But just from hearing the stories and the feedback, you know, we can tell that it's a really complete game," Tabata said. "It's very polished, almost a perfect game in that regard. And our goals are probably to take that experience that players felt with Breath of the Wild, but with our own technology and our own know-how."

Breath of the Wild did a lot of things right. Nothing felt copy/paste and it made for a unique open world experience. It looks like it's already shaping the landscape of future open world games. It may help push Final Fantasy forward as an open world game, so we aren't pushing cars in extended scenes (FF:XV) anymore.

Cliff Bleszinski On LawBreakers: "I Have To Keep This Game Alive"
Sep 16, 2017 - 12:07 PM - by Emabulator

Cliffy B said he wants to be "less of a dick" to people online. GameSpot has the story.

Cliff Bleszinski knows the player figures for LawBreakers right now are low. But he isn't losing faith. Games can be slow-burners--just look at Warframe as an example--and developer Boss Key has big plans to get lapsed players to return and bring in new ones. In an interview with GameSpot this week, Bleszinski spoke frankly about LawBreakers. He told us he's been humbled by the low player figures; he talked about the mistakes he made in the direction of the game. He said launching near "Destiny season" probably didn't help. And he said he wants to be "less of a dick" with his interactions with people online.

Jamie Lee Curtis Returning for Halloween Sequel in 2018
Sep 15, 2017 - 4:53 PM - by Emabulator

The Hollywood Reporter has the story.

Jamie Lee Curtis is returning to Halloween, the horror franchise that helped to launch her career.

"Jamie Lee Curtis returns to her iconic role as Laurie Strode in HALLOWEEN, released by Universal Pictures October 19, 2018. #HalloweenMovie," Blumhouse Productions tweeted Friday.

"Same porch. Same clothes. Same issues. 40 years later. Headed back to Haddonfield one last time for Halloween," Curtis tweeted.

David Gordon Green, the co-creator of HBO's Eastbound & Down and director of movies such as Pineapple Express and Our Brand Is Crisis, will helm a new movie with a script co-written by him and frequent collaborator Danny McBride. That announcement was made in February by John Carpenter, the co-creator of the franchise and director the 1978 original.

Blumhouse, Miramax and Trancas are the production entities involved. Carpenter will executive produce along with Gordon Green and McBride’s Rough House Pictures.

"David and Danny both came to my office recently with Jason Blum and shared their vision for the new movie and … WOW. They get it. I think you're gonna dig it. They blew me away," Carpenter wrote then. "I might even do the music. Maybe. It could be kind of cool. And you'll get to see it in theaters on October 19th, 2018."

Curtis has played Laurie Strode in multiple Halloween films. Her first appearance was in the classic 1978 original when the world was introduced to the mask-wearing, mental-patient mass-murderer Michael Myers.

Weekend Headbanger - What are you listening to? #Overkill
Sep 14, 2017 - 7:06 PM - by Emabulator

I saw Havok, Crowbar and Overkill last night at Irving Plaza in New York on the Metal Alliance Tour. Havok was okay and Crowbar was a mixed bag. Havok was wire tight, the band can bring it, but the song writing has room to grow. Crowbar has some great grooves and some cool vocals, but some of the bridges and riffs were bordering on cringe worthy.

Overkill rocked the house. The crowd, which I was glad to see was packed with a lot of young headbangers, went friggin' nuts during Overkill. Vocalist Bobby Blitz knows how to work the crowd ("We're gonna' pound so much metal down your throats you'll be shitting roofing nails!") and the set was tight, with a good mix of new and older tunes.

Call of Duty: WWII Multiplayer Beta Coming to PC on September 29th
Sep 14, 2017 - 6:28 PM - by Emabulator

Sledgehammer has announced that the Call of Duty: WWII multiplayer beta is coming to PC on September 29th.

Thanks to everyone for making the Call of Duty: WWII Private Multiplayer Beta on console a huge success. We received a ton of great feedback and insights that we’re applying across the game on the road to launch. We’re also thankful for the open and constructive dialogue throughout the course of the Beta. It meant a lot to every developer who was actively reading comments on Reddit and our social channels. And best of all, it was great to finally be able to play Call of Duty: WWII with the community.

Now, the Multiplayer Beta is coming to PC as an Open Beta for all PC gamers.

Together with Raven Software, we’re excited to share that the Call of Duty: WWII Open Multiplayer Beta on PC will kick off on September 29th and run through October 2nd on Steam.

The PC Open Beta is just a small part of the full Call of Duty: WWII Multiplayer experience coming to Steam in November. This test is a critical step on our road to delivering the best possible online experience on Steam at launch in November, with the following key goals:
  • Stress test core gameplay systems and online backend infrastructure at scale
  • Provide PC fans with their first hands-on experience of the boots-on-the-ground combat coming in Call of Duty: WWII Multiplayer
  • Engage with the PC community to fine-tune and optimize the PC experience for November
Here are the minimum PC specs you’ll need to play in the Beta test. Please note that these specs are for the Beta only. In our next update, we’ll share the recommended PC specs for the Beta, since we’re finalizing this part of our testing as we speak.

Min Spec:
OS: Windows 7 64-Bit or later
CPU: Intel® Core™ i3 3225 or equivalent
HDD: 25 GB HD space
Video: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 660 @ 2 GB / AMD Radeon™ HD 7850 @ 2GB or better
DirectX: Version 11.0 compatible video card or equivalent
Network: Broadband Internet connection
Sound Card: DirectX Compatible

These specs could change following the PC Open Beta, so we’ll share the final specs closer to launch.
